    RAM (Random Access Memory) is your computer’s short-term workspace. When you open your code editor, run a local server, compile code, or spin up a browser to test your app — all of that lives in RAM temporarily.

    The more things you run simultaneously, the more RAM you consume. A developer’s typical session doesn’t just involve a text editor. You’ve also got a browser open (probably with 15 tabs), maybe a database running locally, a terminal or two, and possibly Docker containers humming in the background.

    When RAM fills up, your system starts using the hard drive as overflow memory — a process called paging or using swap space. This slows everything down noticeably, sometimes to a crawl.

    It’s also worth noting that on Apple Silicon Macs, memory is unified — meaning the GPU shares it with the CPU. A 16GB M-series Mac handles memory very differently than a 16GB Windows laptop, and often performs better as a result. If you’re on a budget and eyeing a base-model MacBook Air with 8GB, that’s worth factoring in.
