• Inspiration - The Awesome Work of Alex Varanese

Last week, I got an email from Alex Varanese letting me know about his new artwork that he put up on his site. After checking it out, I let him know right away I’d be sharing his great work with yall! Normally I don’t give a lot of detail on the backgrounds of the artists or the art pieces themselves really in Inspiration posts, but I really liked his concept behind his work, so I’m going to share that with you as well. And you can check out his site for some more work. Here is a bit about Alex:

As a designer with a background in 3D, I’ve noticed that there isn’t quite as much overlap between the two as I think there could be. While it’s common to incorporate 3D elements in 2D designs, I think it’d be interesting to see more design done entirely in 3D, from the ground up. And not just abstract stuff, but true 3D illustration; textures, lighting rigs, the whole thing. This was the guiding idea behind most of my work, and hopefully what makes it interesting.

I just finished my second series, "Urban Cartography", which was all about deconstructing my view of San Francisco’s urban environment and rebuilding it in the form of cubes, tiles and other hacked apart elements. I wanted to contrast realistic details with totally abstract arrangements, resulting in something both recognizable and surreal. Buildings, advertisements, sidewalks, parking meters, everything. Again, typography was woven into each scene, treated like any another 3D element, instead of being composited in later in 2D or faux-3D.

My first series was entitled "Circuit Bent Type", named after the process of circuit bending, in which musicians take old keyboards or electronic toys and rewire them to create bizarre new sounds. Despite being purely digital, I wanted the pieces to look almost like found art; stuff I’d wired together from discarded cassette tapes and electronic components. I then incorporated typographic elements into the 3D scene as well (in some pieces more than others).
