As I’ve mentioned, I’m a huge fan of type. So much so, my family and loved ones are pretty sick of font talk by now :) There are tons of fonts out there, and many many good ones that often go overlooked. With the surge of "Coolest Grunge Fonts" post, etc, I wanted to do something different. These are all (in my opinion) beautiful, elegant serif fonts. They are all free, though the licensing are different from font to font, so make sure you check the info page for information. Also want to warn you this is a long post :) But I wanted to have a good preview of each font. Below the preview, you’ll find a link to more info, and to download the font.
So again, these are great serif fonts that you may not have heard of or seen before. I highly recommend getting them all, because you can never have to many quality fonts :)

Really nice roundup! It’s hard to find these quality free fonts among the masses of bad ones.

Mido looks very promising, I’ll have to watch for the full release. and Gentium and Vera are ambitious projects, to say the least (also see Vera’s twin, DejaVu).
a few of these jump out as pirated right away, though:
Portland > Palatino
Oxford > Perpetua
Athena > Baskerville (not sure which one)
and these two look suspiciously familiar:
Alexandria
Grandesign Neue Serif

help! I downloaded oxford and used it all the way through a major publication, and is appearing fine on screen but when i go to print it it is using a completely different font, or not appearing at all….. help!

mmmm …but what is a serif font like bodoni that has a thin hairline ascender on the right hand side of the upper case M? All other serif fonts have the thin ascender on the left. It ocurred in a Bontempi bicycle frame and I wondered if it was delibrate to avoid patent rights or something. Did they turn the M?
